Who we are
CGSI serves students in grades 6 through 8 in the Carroll Gardens area of Brooklyn. We are in our third year practicing mastery with a diverse population of learners in a complete ICT setting.
Hallmarks of CGSI's approach to mastery
- Clear and specific goals that allow teachers to create individualized learning experiences for a diverse population of learners.
- Integration of learning outcomes using project based learning and technology integration.
What makes CGSI unique?
During several periods each week, students are scheduled into periods for “intensive” small groups, based on their current mastery of Math and ELA learning outcomes. Math & ELA departments continually reevaluate and reschedule students in response to growth beyond the scope of the intensive groups’ work.
Assessment and overall mastery data drive students’ goals-setting sessions with mentors, and mentors provide feedback to students using the language of mastery (‘Meeting’, ‘Exceeding’, ‘Not Yet’, ‘Approaching’).
- Technology teachers explicitly introduce and assess understanding of the language of Mastery Based Grading and fluency with Hive, CGSI’s online communication hub.
What can other schools learn from you?
Classroom space and student group design responsive to mastery data
Connection of mastery data and language to staff-to-student mentoring
- School-wide and department-level sharing and implementation of differentiation practices
